There were car seats in the 70's but they weren't main stream and certainly not anything like they are today. I don't believe they were required by law until the mid 80's. When I get more time I'll see if I can dig up info on the history of car seats. (My kids need help with homework and I need to get dinner going soon.)

I pulled into a McD's parking lot a few summers ago, and noticed the car next to me had a baby sleeping in the back seat. maybe 3 or 4 months old, and it had to be close to 85 degrees. I didn't have a cell on me, and this place was right on the highway - anybody could have snatched that baby and been gone in an instant. My aunt ws meeting us there so I stood for about 5-10 minutes next to this car, looking around for ANYBODY. Finally my aunt got there, so she gave me a pen and we wrote down the plate number. FINALLY, somebody comes out. Not because of their kid, but because they saw us looking at the front of their car and thought that I had hit it. nice priorities, huh?
So I told them that i was calling the police and reporting their neglect. so they got in the car and took off. I went in to make the call, but first I asked the cashier how long they'd been their before they rushed out. She guessed probably at least an hour (though it's possible it wasn't really that long, that was just her guess), and asked what was going on. (I was so upset at what COULD have happened to this kid had it seen some sicko who pulled in instead of me that I was shaking like a leaf). Police came and got the info from us. He ran the plates - and they came back to a different kind of car. he went to the address the plates were listed as, and it was obviously not the right people (if I recall correctly, it was an elderly couple). So they got away with it.
Thank God nothing happened to the baby - and atleast if they were going to ignore her well-being, they did leave the window open so she didn't die....

That poor poor thing! People like that don't deserve to have children. :(

When I was 7 or so my mom, who is a great mother, left me in the car while she ran into the grocery store to get one thing. I spent the time carefully melting off the wax coating on an extra-large paper cup (like you get at fast food places) with the car's cigarette lighter. When my mom came back, which was just a few minutes later, I proudly showed her my accomplishment. She nearly had a heart attack at the thought that I could have started a fire in the car or burned myself.

I understand how tempting it is, but I wouldn't leave a kid in the car until they were a bit older, especially if doing stupid things while left in a car is genetically-based.

I won't get gas with Nolan in the car unless I can use my card at the pump. I admit It's too much of a hassle to unbuckle him to go in and pay, but this is largely do to the fact that he hates all things car, so once I get him into the car and settled I am not going to mess with him again until we get to where we are going! lol So if I get to a gas station and realize I have to go inside to pay I lazily drive to another gas station and use my card at the pump, lol.

Same here. I'll get gas on the weekends when my husband is home and can watch Oliver.

confession: My son fell and scraped his face and hand all up during our 2nd delivery today... so I let him sit in the car while I ran the food up to the rest of the houses on the route.

I must confess I leave my girls in the car when I'm running Avon mags in places sometimes but I always take the keys out and I take the girls with me if I'm going out of sight or somewhere that will take me more than two seconds.

I guess I dont know a whole lot about taking care a 7 year old, But that law sounds pretty fair to me. But any less I guess I could understand controversy If they were any younger. I think I can remember even being as young as 5 and my mom leaving me In the car. She would just say "Dont leave the car cuz Im leaving my purse In here." Or " If you decide to come In lock the door." My largest goal as far as being a parent Is to have a communication sort-of discipline with my son. My father never had to yell or hit me NEVER! Just remeber to set your child locks an take yer keys out..

I don't know... I guess I remember my mom leaving me in the car too, and I always seemed to know what to do. It's hard to say, I suppose it would be kid by kid.

I don't care what my parents did when I was a kid. They never made us wear seat belts, so that shows you how times have changed. I would never consider leaving either of my kids unsupervised in a vehicle until they are at least 13, especially since it's illegal in my state.

In case anyone missed these links the first time...

I'm with you Trina. I would never leave her in the car. Well I should clarify, I have left her in the car in my driveway. I have one neighbor that is about 400 yards away and that is my sister in law. I have no neighbors. I live next to a field and there is a field across the street as well. So I have left her there for a minute to run in the house.

When I was a kid my mom left me in the car while she ran in the post office to check our box - gone for probably 3 minutes - I lowered the parking brake (we were on an incline) and started rolling - luckily one of those concrete barriers at the front of the parking space behind us kept me from rolling into traffic.

I don't leave my daughter in the car no matter what. Kidnappers and pedophiles could be anywhere, and I have no intention of ending up on CNN because of my own laziness.

I hear ya on the "times have changed". By the whole communication thing I meant my dad would even ask me If I wanted to go in. Then again I grew up drivin dirt bikes and stuff. I knew not to play with the car.

Unfortunately it has been happening all to often over here in Perth as well. A few weeks ago a young lady went to the casino over here and left her 10 month old girl in her car while she gambled all night. The security guards found the baby asleep and contacted police. When they questioned the mother about it they found that she had been doing this for months. The family welfare got involved over it. But that is just one example as there has been a lot of this happening lately.
