, a county- or statewide database that is often public and accessible to everyone through the internet.

What would you do if a registered sex offender was getting out of jail and moving into your neighbourhood? We all know that after re-hibilitation, sex offenders have the ability to re-offend and with that knowledge how would you handle a sex offender moving into your area?

I love that site. Luckily there is only one sex offender within 25 miles from us and he is at least 15 miles away.

To respond to the original post...
I would lock my kids indoor's forever. I know they are people too and that they served their time BUT these are my kids, my responsibility. I wouldn't be able to trust someone who has been so called "rehabilitated". I think the fears and things people say is part of their punishment for doing what they did.

Sex offenders also have a particularly high right of re-offending.

That said, I once had one in the neighboring unit of my apartment building. Landlord didn't bother to disclose when we moved in. But we never had any problems with him. As a matter of fact, when my teen brother moved in with me Keith (the neighbor) made a point of stopping me. He told me he was a registered sex offender and that he could not interact with minors. He wanted me to talk to my brother, b/c my brother is very sociable and kept trying to strike up conversations if they would pass by one another. My bro (who has mild special needs) was just not grasping it.
It was definately a little wierd after I knew - interactions with him where definately stifled, but there was nothing that raised my eyebrows or anything.

the only thing I have to add abotu sights like this that tell you where they live.
I don't remember the exact number but somewhere over 50% of sex offenders do not give their correct address or do not tell them when they move.

Thanks alot Kaytee, I felt all safe and secure about only having one so close, lol. Not really, I figured that something like that was possible.

I did see this episode of Dr. Phil a while ago that they were talking about this. It was either Florida or California, I can't remember which, but there was litterally hundreds in just one area. The tennants and even some landlords were very upset over this. There wasn't much they could do though. I would think the landlord could come up with something to stop a sex offender from moving into their buildings.

I know in our state there isn't a law in place yet so it shows they are all sexual predators. A lady I know has a husband who was 18 had sex with a consenting 17 yr old and because they had a child he is labeled a sexual offender. She talked to me for about an hour of the trouble because of it. I felt bad for her and their kids because he's not a pedophile.
We have one at the end of our road who got caught with child porn. Freaks me out.

it is scary. But I don't personally think websites that tell you where they loive is effecient. To me the best thing to do, is just inform your children of the dangers and be proactive in their lives.

I couldn't agree more. I would want to know just were he lived so my kids would stay clear of that area.

They do here. We always get flyers in the mail about the one near us. He has to be embarassed everytime he gets one. Probably every other month or so.

When we finally moved we had 3 THREE registered sex offenders with in walking distance. The last one was two houses away. He was an old man that had lived in the same house for YEARS. Charges were filed when my hubby was a kid(not related to hubby that guy liked little girls) but then the charges were dropped. Charges were filed again on a new case a month before we left. In our neighbor hood if the sex offender lives within so close of your home you get a pamphlet in the mail with their picture, address, and their charges. The town we live in now has 2. That's 2 out of the 2700 full time residents.

People tend to think in extremes when it comes to sex offenders, picturing them ruthless creeps that, like alcoholics, are addicted to sex, and live for their next sexual attack.

Many years ago I worked as an aid to a superior court judge, and frequently there were men arrested for various minor sex crimes, most often it was having sexual contact with girls under the age of 18. I remember men 18-25 being in court after being caught having sex with their 16-17 year old girlfriends, or simply caught taking "sexual Liberties" (sex acts other than intercourse). Technically they were sex offenders, but in reality these men weren't creepy crawlers who preyed on girls\women and were not at any risk to do so in the future. They were just plain stupid in getting involved with girls (<18) who were attracted to older men.

Its slightly different when a bf of 21 has sex with his gf of 17 (sadly enough in canada the consenting age is 14)

Meow, it is different, yet the label of sex offender applies to pretty much all men who cross the line legally, but if you look at the surrounding circumstances, the crimes committed range significantly from very minor to huge risk.

14 is too young in my opinion because girls at that age have a wide range of physical/emotional/mental development. If you twist my arm, I would technically agree that a minority girls at that age can handle sex, but most can not. Men who are interested in 14 year old girls are just as likely to seduces a girl who can't handle sex as they are to those who can, maybe more likely to go after naive/innocent girls, and that is mind boggling wrong.

Jtee while I agree dont forget about women sex offenders. Thats probably why the flyers that go out have the charges on then as well as a slight description of what happened. IE....."sexual assualt asgainst his 12 yo niece." That kinda thing. There's a different between stupidity and sexual perversion.

The first thing I would do is check into why they were required to register. As it was mentioned before, "sex offender" labels get put on people who are accused of crimes other than what we usually assume to be the worst.

If in fact, I found that their crime was one of assaulting young children, etc... I would be more aware of their presence in my neighborhood. I am already one of those people who keep my eyes out and don't take them off my child.

When we lived at our last house, there was an offender that lived about 5 houses away and he was one that assaulted young children. Pretty creepy.
