My best advice, take it to a reptile shop and ask!
My dh got me a turtle he found at a golf course. SO i took him to the reptile store and they told me he was a baby snapper!

Yeah, the painted looks really similar to the red belly... *scratches head*

Or your best bet would be to put him back, because you need to have a tank, water (the right amount of water too) diet, lighting etc.
