I just don't see a reason for new laws. It's illegal to drive impaired or distracted in most if not all states. I say, cops start writing tickets and leave the lawmakers out of it, it's just a waste of legislative time.

If we're going to have specific laws about cell phones and texting then, why not a law about changing a CD, or lighting a cigarette, or opening a box of candy, or a big mac box.....?
Texting is alot more distracting than those.

They are trying to here, because, say if I was driving and smoking, unless a policeman sees that I am driving erratically, he can't pull me over about smoking, with a law in place, he can and he can take action against the driver. Having one hand busy is very very dangerous, what ever road, what ever car.
I believe that's the way it is in Ohio... you can't actually get pulled over for not wearing your seatbelt.

I think walking and texting is hard enough, never mind driving! I always get scared when my BIL drives us around Florida, you see kids without seat belts and everything, its the kind of thing that makes me want to tell their mam and dad off for. I've owned a motorbike as well, so seeing people without leathers or a helmet makes me feel quite sick.

Oh, I agree, but the point is that there are already laws against it, we don't need new laws.
Not necessarily... Ohio doesn't have any laws, yet. Right now it's a county by county thing.

I don't understand how people can be so reckless when they drive, I mean the things you hear, I often think, how did they even pass their driving test. One our students has to be driven to school by a teacher now as his mother wrote off their car putting mascara on while driving at 50mph!

Well the difference between talking, eating, smoking or whatever while driving (all dangerous enough) and texting while driving is that all those things only require your hand to do, where texting requires at least one hand and both of your eyes and that's why its way above all those other things as far as dangerous distractions go.

And yeah, its pretty insane that its a law to wear a seatbelt in your car here but its legal for you not to wear a helmet on a motorcycle. Its like - HELLO!??! Very stupid.

Police have only been allowed to stop motorists since 30th June
Wrong again. Where are you getting these statements? They have been able to pull over motorists for not wearing seatbelts for a very long time here in Fl. At least a year.

I live here in Florida, I was a police officer here when they first started making it a legal requirement and that was 2 years ago.

really? There is no state law against "driving distracted" or "Driving Impared...." I'm amazed.

Driving impaired, yes, when concerning alcohol/drug use. Right now, in Cuyahoga County (where I live), they're trying to push through a bill that would make it illegal to text and drive.

I appologize, you are right. I may have misunderstood your original statement. Were you saying you couldnt get a ticket at all for not wearing your seatbelt?

Example: You get pulled over for speeding and the officer saw you were not wearing a seatbelt and gave you one for speeding and another for the seatbelt.

Is that what you were saying was not allowed?

Being pulled over for 'just' not wearing a seat belt.

Somewhere boring, Illinois
I went and bought some new phones for me and my hub from at&t and the lady asked me what kind of phone do I want and how often do we text. I said.. we dont really text, they have this new nifty invention where you can actually pick up the phone and TALK to people now! She looked at me like I was crazy and was completely shocked that I said that and that I dont text lol. Ive only ever used it if Im in a place where I cant talk but info has to be given to someone right away.. or for sending pics. But never in a car! I really cant even stand driving and talking on the phone at the same time. Its rediculous.. i think that if you have something that has to be said right away and you cant wait till you get where you are going.. you should just call not text.

I've often wondered what Alexander Graham Bell would think..... He invents a great device so that people can talk to each other and we've turned it back into a telegraph......

I seriously doubt that Jeremy. I'm not sure how you can really compare the 2. Certainly, driving while doing anything is taking chances, but being 4X the legal limit drunk can't really be compared.

Three years of studies on it in the UK on it when Jackson learnt to drive, so I don't know if there have been yearly publications afterwards, all showing that the phone is more dangerous than the drink.

This is quite a good link, the published studies are copyrighted, so I can't read them online.

This one was well.
