Honestly, I don't like it much at all really. I don't see myself allowing my kids to post pictures of themselves on the internet. It makes me extremely uncomfortable.

I am not sure what age is o.k. but both of my boys have them (15 and 17) and I monitor them. They are not allowed to have them unless I have all passwords ect. I check them when I feel neccesary. Also, we do not have computers in any bederooms. Only in the family room and we also have a power on password. the only time they are allowed to be online is when we are home. other than when we are home...the computer is turned off. and they do not have access. We try to keep our kids in check.

I completely understand this. I'm very picky about posting pics of myself on the internet.

I wholeheartedly believe the internet can be dangerous but I think that if you have to put the computer in open areas and have all passwords and only your child to go online when you're home, then there is higher chance or your child wanting to look up forbidden things.

I'd rather have my child looking up porn in the privacy of his room than out having sex.

But I think it's amazing at how responsible kids can be if you give them the chance. With the way computers are used for schoolwork these days I couldn't fathom not having a computer in my child's room.

I agree with Fooser. I have seen MySpace accts of VERY young children be downright scary...

Children form groups to commiserate... They have cutting groups, ana-mia groups all kinds of crazy shit geared towards your kids...

I think Facebook is safer, but both are iffy for your kids.

MySpace has always had the 14 years old rule. Since the beginning. This is the reason these parents wouldn't be able to sue MySpace, they would never win. The child was 14.

But God forbide if something should happen to your child related to MySpace and they are underage, you have absolutely no recourse. It scares the crap out of me.

And thats exactly why if kids are going to have myspace or Facebook, parents need to either monitor their activies to a certain extent, or caution them about talking/meeting people on the net
I agree!

I agree with Fooser. I don't think any of my kids will have a myspace account. It's nice that they can communicate, but there are so many other things that they could be doing with their time.

I've heard people talking about how teens and kids are struggling socially because the only way they know how to communicate is through myspace and texting. They need some real life experiences. I don't think it hurts them to not participate in the social websites. I want my kids to be well balanced socially.

Mindy, what specifically scares you about myspace and/or facebook?

I think it would be ok for them to start at 14-15 as long as they understand that Mom will be checking in to see what's going on. If they don't want me to see something, then it shouldn't be posted for anyone else to see.

Our school puts on a very good assembly for the kids about internet safety and how posting simple things could turn into a nightmare. The kids are amazed at what they are shown/told at the program and it is interesting to hear their responses after the assembly.

Again - I don't know if people should be making such blanket assumptions that there kid doesn't maintain one elsewhere. They don't have to use their real name, and it wouldn't matter, because all they have to do is know a friend's myspace ID and send them an email saying "hey, I'm here. This is the name I am going under."
Besides, there's a lot you can look up on Myspace without being a member.

Sorry jtee, I was gone away for a few days.

Do a google search for the words "ana" and "mia" check out the hundreds of thousands of links you get. These are specifically aimed at girls 8-15. Ana is anorexia. Mia is bulimia. That's how they hide it. It an unbelievably scary under ground world of young girls who don't think it's an eating disorder but rather a way of life.

If you search about Law enforcement you will see how many internet cops they have that spend all day long on MySpace trying to catch people praying on your children. I have even seen a female cop dress as a 13 year old girl and this gross old man set up a meeting with her...

It just scares me I guess. I am a tech dummie, so it may just be that I'm paranoid, but I'm afraid even the most stringent security can be thwarted by people trying to pray on children.

Anamia websites are all over, not just on myspace. I used to volunteer for ANAD and take these sites down.

That's great Lissa.

And yes, they are all over, not just MySpace... But it does make it easier for these youngsters to congregate.

Both of my older sons have Myspace and Facebook. They are 12 and 16. Myspace isn't very popular around here anymore, so they usually use Facebook. Facebook is a lot better because you can set it so that only kids from their school can see their information and pictures. Sean got Myspace when he was 11 and Facebook when he was 12, and I haven't had to monitor him very much, because he uses the computer in the kitchen.

I have to add that it is A LOT easier to take down myspace accounts than regular websites/forums. There is a very handy "report abuse" option at the bottom of every profile on myspace.

how do they make the judgment as far as what should and shouldn't go? If you are going to deal with unhealthy lifestyles, then a whole lot of college kids would no longer have a site, because so many sing the praises of drinking excessively.

And anamia isn't ILLEGAL, so that can't be the deciding factor.
Any idea?
